Autumn Halloween Wedding Inspiration
DARK & MOODY HALLOWEEN WEDDING INSPIRATION

For this Halloween wedding post, I wanted to focus on a romantic, ghostly Victorian vibe. This real bridal shoot was taken in a home built in the 1600’s in Charleston, SC that still retains the original painted walls. The bride wore a classic ball gown with a cathedral veil. Her dress is an homage to the white gown that Queen Victoria wore to her own wedding in the 1840’s. Queen Victoria is where the term Victorian Era comes from AND she is also the reason why brides wear white gowns today.

Dont forget, the Victorians were actually pretty “goth” and VERY morbid. They would make mourning jewelry out of deceased loved ones hair, were obsessed with spiritualism and had some fun and spooky traditions like looking in mirrors with a candle to see your soulmates face.

This post is also filled with color ideas, venues & movie inspiration to help you visualize the romantic Victorian Halloween wedding of your dreams!

How to Choose Your Venue

  • Your venue should be a spooky, almost empty house or an over the top decorated mansion, a garden with lots of statues and fountains, an old hotel or an old glass conservatory.
  • The building should be built between 1600-1915
  • You’re looking for original details such as chandeliers, grand staircases and wavy glass windows. Basically, if you can envision a Victorian ghost roaming the halls, it should work!
  • Real venue inspo: The Plaza Hotel, The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, The Atlanta History Center, Great Marsh Estate, & Salubria, Drayton Hall, The Stanley Hotel, Lowndes Grove, Rosecliff Mansion, The Breakers Mansion, Greystone Mansion, Metropolitan Building, The Mount Lenox, Larz Anderson House

Your Outfits

  • If you’re wearing a dress: Brides started wearing white wedding dresses because of Queen Victoria so this is one instance where I think that would work best. But don’t rule out blush pink or slate gray! Long veils, blusher veils, crowns or flower pins for your hair would be lovely as would puff sleeves.
  • If you’re wearing a suit: a classic black tux works with a bowtie or Brackish Bowtie. You could also do a deep navy or emerald green suit.

Colors & Design

  • If you want a softer more romantic look, your colors should be a little more muted. Think blush pink, soft blue, mustard yellow, slate gray, mauve, sage green.
  • For a dark and moody look, you can use navy, emerald, plum, black, red, teal.
  • For the actual decor you’ll want to use organic & textured pieces like flowers, velvet, silk, lace and applique. Candles, bell jars, ornate frames & mirrors, silhouettes, silver chalices, old books or music sheets, sculpture busts, skulls, dark wood furniture, antique furniture & silverware.
  • For something REALLY fun and on brand, host your wedding reception as a masquerade ball or costume party! These were huge in the Victorian & Gilded Age eras.

Movie, Tv & Other Inspiration

  • To get ideas watch The Others, Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Victoria, The Beguiled, The Living & The Dead, Casper, Crimson Peak, Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina, The Duchess, Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Key words for inspiration: romantic Halloween wedding, Victorian wedding inspiration, Spooky wedding venues, dark academia
